about
As a young man, I read my first book about St. Francis of Assisi. I became fascinated and inspired by him. Over the next 25 years, weaving songs, music and narration, I gradually created 'Good Morning Good People' (St. Francis of Assisi – A Journey in Song). This has been the ‘big work’ of my creative life.
This post is not so much a song as a 'segment' from that 'journey in song' with St. Francis. You will hear a shortish version of the song 'Good Morning Good People', also my narration with musical interludes. The segment goes for eight minutes and tells of an important turning point in the saint’s life.
Brief context leading up to the segment:
Francis Bernadone, a rich young man of Assisi, is captured during a local battle. He spends a year in prison. After release he falls into deep depression from which he does not emerge until he encounters a Leper and finds the grace to embrace him . He then realises his life's mission and begins his radically simple way of life after hearing a passage from the Gospels.
The recording here is from a concert in St Jude’s Church Bowral in 2013. There were three performers – me, Catherine Mahony (vocals) and Roma Dix (flute). During the years 2003-2015, I was involved in over a hundred small-scale performances of 'Good Morning Good People' in Australia, Ireland and the U.K.
In 1994-95 there were eight large-scale performances of GMGP in Mittagong, Sydney, Newcastle and Canberra. There is a different double-CD recording from one of these performances.
lyrics
CHORUS:
Good morning good people!
Good Morning Good People
Lift your heads and smile on the sun
Smile on yourselves I say.
Good morning good people!
Good Morning Good People
It’s such a very fine day.
What can we do but praise our God?
Leave for one moment your busy preparations
Come walk a little way from it all.
Our Brother Sun is rising, all the world is shining.
In this bright morning you can hear God’s call. CHORUS
