'A King in Rags' is a song that relates well to the feast of Christ the King (November 24th). It is sung here by Claire Parkhill.

I wrote the song in 1970, only four years after 'Fill My House'. This recording was originally included on a cassette tape called 'Where Is Your Song, my Lord' (1985). Later it was included on my double-CD compilation 'Make Me a Song (The Best of 25 Years)', which is still available. (See Related Resources' below).

lyrics

A KING IN RAGS

Who is this child lies in a stable?
Who is this baby born so poor?
He is the child called Jesus and he is a King...
Do you know him?

Who is this man sleeps by the roadside?
Has he no home to keep him warm?
He is the man called Jesus- calls no place his home.
Do you love him? He’s a King.

And I ask you who to place high?
Who to place low among men?

Who is this man sleeps by the roadside?
Has he no home to keep him warm?
He is the man called any-man - he has no home.
Do you love him? He’s a man.

And I ask you who is the tramp?
Who is the king? Who can say?

Who is this man here on a Cross hung,
Numbered with thieves and scorned by all?
He is the man called Jesus and he is your king.
If you love him, judge no man.

Words & music by Peter Kearney

** Lyric amendments. When I sing the song these days -
instead of "Who to place high? Who to place low among men",
I sing "Who to place high? Who to place low? Who can say?"

At the end, instead of "judge no man", I sing "judge no-one."
