Dorothy Ann Soper Many times in the darkness that can lead to depression I pray to see the sun rise tomorrow. A lovely bunch of flowers from a friend. A phone call from a daughter, I am lifted. I give thanks for a wonderful life.

NOTES: 'Luke the Doctor' is an early song by me, published for the first time through Bandcamp. I wrote it when I was in my early 20s, soon after I'd started living in England, having travelling by the 'overland route' from Australia.

The 'Luke' of the song was no-one in particular but perhaps I was thinking back to Australia and my friendship with Fr. Ted Kennedy - someone in whom I had been able to confide.

The recording was made on a Revox reel-to-reel tape recorder a few years after the song was written. I asked an English friend Paul Jeffery to sing while I played the guitar.

The artwork you see in the track-image is Dorothy Woodward's 'Francis in the Cave', created for the illustrated script for 'Good Morning Good People', my musical-narrative on the life of St. Francis of Assisi. As a young man, Francis fell into deep depression after a year spent in prison (following a battle between Assisi and Perugia, a neighbouring town).

lyrics

LUKE THE DOCTOR
This morning I felt so down
I thought I’d come round here and talk a bit.
This morning I felt so down
I thought I’d come round here and talk a bit.

Oh Luke my friend, my only friend
Can you give me one new word?
Oh Luke my friend, my only friend
Can you give me one true word?

Luke, you are the doctor.
Luke, you are the doctor you.
Oh Luke …
Can you see any good in being me?

This morning I felt so alone
I thought I’d come round here and talk a bit.
This morning I felt so alone …

Oh Luke my friend, my only friend
Can you take this weight from me?
Oh Luke my friend, my only friend
Can you break this space about me?

Luke, you are the doctor.
Luke, you are the doctor you.
Oh Luke …
Can you see any good in being me?
