Dorothy Ann Soper I petition Jesus for unity.
We all, Christians, pray to the same God.
Couldn't we do it all together.
May not happen for a long time.
This is a time of change, guide us Jesus.

NOTES on 'Gathered for the Journey'.
I wrote this song for (and first sang it at) a large Sydney gathering of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, NSW. Thanks to Kate Scholl for the invitation. The song was later made available through Vinnies ‘member-resources’, but it has not previously been published by me.

The St Vincent de Paul Society was founded in Paris in 1833 by a 20-year-old student named Frederic Ozanam. He gathered a group of like-minded individuals who wished to put their faith into action through charitable works. The group adopted the name Society of St Vincent de Paul, after the patron saint of Christian charity.

Groups (known as Conferences) sprang up in other French parishes and then internationally. The first Australian Conference was established in 1854. "We are called as Vincentians, to feed, clothe, house and assist our brothers and sisters."

lyrics

GATHERED FOR THE JOURNEY
As we gather for the journey in your name
In your light and in your flame
Lord be here among us, make us new
Shine through us in all we do you.
One in many we are now.
Gathered for the journey now.

CHORUS:
Oh and help us to be the change
that we would like to see.
And may we find your face
in everyone we're called to meet.
Gathered for the journey now.
One in many we are now in your name.

We are builders of the Kingdom in your name
In your light and in your flame.
Servants of the needy, living signs
Of your saving love through time.
One in many we are now.
Gathered for the journey now. CHORUS

In the spirit of St Vincent, Frederic came
Cared for justice in your name.
Help us to continue in his way,
Bring his work into our day.
One in many we are now.
Gathered for the journey now. CHORUS.

We are gathered for the journey in your name
In your light and in your flame.
Old and young together we belong
In one family keep us strong.
One in many we are now.
Gathered for the journey now. CHORUS.
