This is the opening track of my ‘Easter Carols’ CD. Of the thirteen tracks on the CD, seven are traditional songs, favourites of mine for many years, since I learned and adapted them from the Oxford Book of Carols.

Four of the songs on the CD are by the great English songwriter Sydney Carter. Carter’s best known song ‘Lord of the Dance’ is not on this CD but his four songs on this CD are beautiful and thought provoking. The last two tracks are my own song ‘Ashes to Easter’ and ‘O Jesus Crucified’ by Richard Connelly and Australian poet James McAuley.

The whole 'Easter Carols' CD was intended to be simple and reflective.

The moon shines bright and the stars give a light
A little before it is day.
Our Lord, Our God he calls on us
And bids us awake and pray.

Awake, awake good people all,
Awake and you shall hear:
Our Lord Our God he died on the Cross
For us whom he loved so dear.

Oh fair, oh fair Jerusalem
When shall I come to Thee?
When shall my sorrows have an end
Thy joy that I may see?

The life of man is but a span
And cut down it its flower.
We are here today and tomorrow are gone
The creatures of just one hour.

The fields were green as green could be
When Mercy rose complete.
When the Lord, Our God watered the Earth
With heavenly dew so sweet.

But for the saving of our souls
Christ died upon the Cross.
We never shall do for Jesus Christ
As he has done for us.

THE RECORDING:
Peter's guitar, vocals and tenor recorder were recorded in the Riverview Studio, Carlow, Ireland. Female vocals were recorded later in the Little Portion Studio, Welby, NSW.

Female vocals - Louise Cassidy, Clare Michael and Catherine Mahony.

The guitar played by Peter throughout the 'Easter Carols' CD was hand-made for him in 2007 by the Scottish luthier Bill Kelday.
