NOTES from Peter Kearney:
This is a previously unpublished song and recording. (Not to be confused with another song on the same theme 'A King in Rags', which was part of my 'Where Is Your Song, my Lord? album).

I wrote and recorded this song in the early 1970s while living in England. I had purchased a high quality Revox reel-to-reel tape machine that enabled sound-on sound (mono) recording.

So, even in those early days, I was able not only to sing and play guitar, but also to play electric bass, snare drum and add extra voices to the track.

Listening again after many years, I think the track still sounds okay ... and quite dramatic. I don't think it will happen, but I'm imagining the song sung and partly dramatised on Good Friday. A soloist could lead, with a strong group of singers crashing in where my voice is doubled in this recording.

lyrics

THE KING WILL PARADE IN HIS RAGS
From scraps of purple they made your gown.
From cruel thorns they made your crown.
Yes I was there in the crowd.
Was watching how they knelt to you.
Yes was watching how they spat on you.
Yes I was there in the crowd.
One day they will kneel. One day they will kneel.
They'll drop to the knees, but in fear.
One day they will cry. One day they will cry
For cover from the hills will they then cry.
The King will parade in his rags.

You found your subjects in a feast day mood.
"He is not our King" - they jeered and booed.
Yes I was there in the crowd.
"Barabbas! Give him to us.
Not Jesus! He's no King to us".
Yes I was there in the crowd.
One day they will cheer. One day they will cheer.
Their hearts will turn with the wind.
One day they will rise. One day they will rise
To cheer when their chance has gone away.
The King will parade in his rags.

Jesus the saviour whom none would own.
From nails and wood they made your throne.
Yes I was there in the crowd.
"Come down!" So they mocked at you.
"Yes come down!" So I begged of you.
Yes I was there in the crowd.
Maybe you are gone. Maybe you are gone.
You died for us to carry on.
We know that you're still here. We know that you're still here.
One day you'll make your throne the world.
The King will parade in his rags.
The King will parade in his rags.
