about

THE PEACE PRAYER OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI as heard here is an excerpt from a concert-performance of Peter's folk-oratorio GOOD MORNING GOOD PEOPLE. (St. Francis of Assisi - a Journey in Song).

lyrics

This sequence of narration and song occurs during Part 2 of 'Good Morning Good People'. The sequence follows on from a song called 'The Wolf of Gubbio' in which Francis goes to to the cave of a fierce Wolf, which has terrorised the town and region of Gubbio. Francis meets tames the wolf.

[NB. Information is provided below on the availability of the double-CD from which this excerpt is taken].

SCRIPT begins here
NARRATOR 2/ THE LADY:
The obvious way to deal with a Wolf
is by weapons, the use of force.
But Francis chose insight and love.
A similar choice had to be made
as he faced the problems that arose
with the rapid growth of the Franciscan Order.
After only ten years it numbered over five thousand.
Pressure was applied for relaxation of the Rule.
Francis believed that all who joined the Order
would share his ideal of Poverty.
But many did not.
So pressure was applied
to allow for permanent homes for the brothers
for the possession of books.
But Francis couldn't agree to this.

NARRATOR 1/ PILGRIM :
"My Brothers, my Brothers
we should not ask to be dispensed from living the Gospel,
for that is the Rule that God has revealed for me
and those who follow me."
NARRATOR 2/ THE LADY:
But the pressure was relentless
and it brought Francis down.

MUSIC – Wolf Dirge

NARRATOR 1 as Francis:
"It seems to me that I am a Lark no longer.
I am just a small black hen
Trying in vain to keep a large brood of chicks under my wings
While overhead the hawk flies!"

NARRATOR 2/ THE LADY:
His children were going their own way
and he had to let them go.
He resigned leadership of the Order
but he made this prediction:
"Many will turn away from the Lady Poverty
Exact observance will be so far relaxed,
hearts will become so luke-warm
that sons of this poor Father
will not blush to wear scarlet silks and slippers of fur.
But if I cannot correct and influence them
by direction and example,
I will not become an executioner
to punish and flog them
like the authorities of this world."

MAKE ME AN INSTRUMENT OF YOUR PEACE
Francis:
Oh make me an instrument of your peace
Lord make me an instrument of your peace.

Where there is injury, let me sow pardon
Where there is hatred, let me sow love
Where there is doubt, let me sow faith
Make of me an instrument of peace.
Where there is sadness, Lord let me bring your joy
Where there is darkness, Lord let me bring your light
And to despair Lord, to dark despair
Let me be the one to bring new hope.

Oh make me an instrument of your peace.
Lord make me an instrument of your peace.

Oh divine Master, grant me that I may seek
More to be consoling than to be consoled
More to understand than to be understood
Not so much to be loved as to love.
For it's in giving, in giving we receive
And in pardoning, we are pardoned and set free
And it's in dying we're born again,
Born again into eternal life.

Oh make me an instrument of your peace.
Lord make me an instrument of your peace.
