WHAT A TIME TO GO TO WAR
A song of grief and protest, set against a dramatic soundscape.

I originally wrote and published this song at the outbreak of the first Gulf War in January 1991, when the United States and a coalition of 35 nations bombarded, then invaded Iraq.

I am republishing via my song-posts in Bandcamp at a time when Russia has bombarded then invaded the Ukraine. The circumstances are different but the strong sentiment of this song seems just as appropriate.

At time of writing, one promising thing that is emerging is the unprecedented cooperation of nations in applying severe sanctions - hopefully to end the invasion without full-scale war. P.K.

lyrics

WHAT A TIME TO GO TO WAR!

What a time to go to war!
What a way to come together.
Now to speak the bully's language
What a time to go to war.
Just when we thought peace was gaining
The Berlin Wall was coming down.
Now the floods of hate are rising
Feel the tension in the town.

CHORUS:
See the Dove of Peace go flying
Nowhere can it find to land.
The feathers on its wings are tattered.
Floods have covered all the land.

What a time to go to war!
Never should have made those weapons.
Every missile cost a million.
What a time to go to war.
Don't they know the Earth is ailing
People starving every day.
Cash for food is spent by Generals -
In the end the poor will pay. CHORUS.

Now the Cable News is beaming
War into each living room.
See the child, oh see the children
Learn the lessons of the tomb. CHORUS.

What a time to go to war!
Nothing's solved, we shirk the questions.
Now's the time for resolution:
Never is the time for war!
