about

EASTER CAROLS:
This song is the closing track of my ‘Easter Carols’ CD. Of the thirteen tracks on the CD, seven are traditional songs - favourites for many years, since I learned and adapted them from the Oxford Book of Carols.

Four of the songs on the CD are by the great English songwriter Sydney Carter. The other two tracks are my ‘Ashes to Easter’ and ‘O Jesus Crucified’ by Richard Connelly and James McAuley.

'Easter Carols' was intentionally a simple production - mostly my voice and guitar. Many thanks, then and now, to Louise Cassidy, Catherine Mahony and Clare Michael for adding their harmonised vocals.

lyrics

THE WORLD ITSELF KEEPS EASTER DAY
The world itself keeps Easter Day
And Easter larks are singing
And Easter flowers are blooming gay
And Easter buds are springing
Alleluia. Alleluia
The Lord of all things lives anew
And all his works are rising too
Hosanna in excelsis.

There stood three Marys by the tomb
On Easter morning early
When day had scarcely chased the gloom
And dew was bright and pearly.
Alleluia. Alleluia
With loving but with erring mind
They came the Prince of Life to find
Hosanna in excelsis

But earlier still the angel came
With news of comfort giving
“And why”, he said, “among the dead
Go seeking for the living?
Alleluia. Alleluia
Go tell them all and make them blest
Tell Peter first and then the rest.
Hosanna in excelsis".

Then one and one alone remained
With love that could not vary
And so a joy past joy she gained
That sometime sinner Mary
Alleluia. Alleluia
The first the dear Lord’s form to see
Of Him that hung upon the Tree.
Hosanna in excelsis

The world itself keeps Easter Day
And Easter larks are singing
And Easter flowers are blooming gay
And Easter buds are springing
Alleluia. Alleluia
The Lord is living as all things tell
Good Christians, see you rise as well
Hosanna in excelsis

(The third last line would better be sung as:
"The Lord is risen as all things tell")
