about

ADVERTISING MAN
"When Jesus had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables". John 2:15

When I see on television, over and over, the advertisers' relentless promotion of gambling, I think that Jesus would have been angry about that too.

So, perhaps the scathing, angry tone of this song is justified.

lyrics

ADVERTISING MAN
He’s just the man to sell Australia -
he’s doing well, he’s the advertising man.
For anyone who’s selling something
from cigarettes to booze and baby-grands
he knows which nerves to twitch and touch and when
His strategy’s most likely to succeed.
He searches out the place of aching need
and makes a guest appearance as a friend.
And his budget is a big one for the long campaign
to confuse the brain of Australia.

He’s the advertising man...
What’s his name? Mister Advertising Man.

Everything is neat, everything is shiny,
All is new in his new promised land.
No one is old, no poor among us -
that’s his world, the advertising man.
For the bitter pill he’ll make a sugar coat.
For the iron fist he’ll make a velvet glove.
With a little push he’ll win the swinging vote
and the hawk will coo like a dove.
And his budget is a big one for the long campaign
to confuse the brain. And he sweetly sings
as he pulls the strings of Australia.

He’s the advertising man.
Mister Advertising Man.

INTERLUDE:

Keep it simple, keep it stupid - that's his way to go.
That's the way he knows to sell Australia.

How does it feel to love this country?
Crack a can - he’s your advertising mate!
He’s just the man to sell Australia -
he got the contract for nineteen eighty eight.
He knows which nerves to twitch and touch and when
his strategy’s most likely to succeed.
He searches out the place of aching need
and makes a guest appearance as a friend.
And his budget is a big one for the long campaign
to confuse the brain, to sell the soul
and gain control of Australia.
Mr. Advertising Man.
