BACKGROUND
I wrote this song to sing at a rally ('Don't be Fooled - Debt Kills') on the banks of the Yarra River, Melbourne, in the year 2000.

The word 'Jubilee' is derived from the Hebrew word 'jobel', which means 'ram's horn'. It was the horn that was used as a trumpet, whose sound indicated the beginning of the Jubilee Year.

"In the Old Testament, the vision of the Jubilee Year, occurring every 49 years, set out for the community an ideal of justice and social equality. Land was to be returned to its original owners. People in bondage, whether through debt or exploitation by others, were to be set free". (From a paper published by Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace).

The vision of the Jubilee Year was revived and given new emphasis by Christian social justice advocates during the year 2000, with a special focus on cancelling the crippling debt owed by the world's poorest nations. The need for debt relief grows more not less urgent.
