lyrics

DAYS
Day so fair, fine sunny morning,
I see you've risen up so bright and loving me.
Clouds cross my window, eyes cannot see.

Day so lovely, sad misty morning,
Your sorrowed face you wait for me to see. Sorry.
I shuffle by you. I’m sorry.

Day so constant, so wide and clear-eyed,
Fear has a hold on my heart
for I can’t meet your eye.
I clutch at the hours. I’m sorry.

Interlude

Day so stormy, dark on your brow,
So fine your passion
and your tears fall freely down.
You leave the world so shining
But I am dry.

Lord of my days,
teach me to share in your love.
This feast of days, these creatures of your love, I pray.
For each day I fear to feel your hand in mine.

COLLABORATION WITH AN OLD FRIEND
I wrote the words and music for 'Days' when I was in my mid-20s. At the time, I was a single man living in a one-bedroom flat in Basildon, Essex, England. I tended to be quite a solitary seeker and the song reflects that experience.

Later, I met and became friendly with a network of local young people who often referred to themselves 'the gang'. They were a talented and creative bunch and often, in the sitting room of my flat, there would be musical jam-sessions with lots of improvised music.

One of those 'young people' became my wife, Madge, and decades later I am still friendly with several others, though they live in far away England.

Modern digital technology has ways of overcoming distance. That's how, on this recording, my old friend Dick Langford was able to add his lovely acoustic lead-guitar part after verse three. Dick worked with an audio file I sent to him via email. He improvised his solo, mixed it in with my original voice and guitar and then emailed the enhanced file back to me. Thankyou Dick.
