During Lent, I include this song in my 'Ashes to Easter' concert-reflections. It's about the long journey of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt to uncomfortable freedom in the wilderness. As they walked on toward a 'promised land', they were overcome at times by doubt, difficulty, distraction and even despair. The song-lyrics are based on passages from the book of Exodus in the Old Testament.

lyrics

THE SONG OF THE LORD'S TRAVELLERS
When the Jews were in Egypt, they were slaves and ate well
But you promised them then Lord you would make them all free
And you promised to give them a good and broad land
But at first was the desert between.

When you loosed them from comfort and tied them to Thee
They were weary and thirsty and hungry and free.
When they claimed they were dying and cried out for food
Your manna came down with the dew.

CHORUS:
Lord they were hungry, you gave them good food.
Lord they were thirsty, you gave them good drink.
Lord we are hungry and thirsty now.
Lord, Lord help us again!

When the Pharaoh pursued them you closed the Red Sea.
When the water was bitter, you made it come clean.
You were with them and guiding by night and by day
As pillars of smoke and of fire. CHORUS.

While I carry my burden and the end is not near
And the desert is burning so hot and so dry
Lord I am tempted to set my load down.
Lord are you hear with us now? CHORUS.

While I stumble to follow the darkness you are
In the desert as trackless and vast as the sky
Lord, I am tempted to God's of bright gold.
Lord will you shine like a star. CHORUS.

Lord, we would go to your good and broad land.
Lord, we would go through this desert between.
Lord if you'll guide us and keep us from harm.
Lord be our strength and our song! CHORUS.
